Hardscape Contractor in Mar Vista

Some yards look fine on paper. Good bones, decent size, reasonable layout. But the surfaces tell a different story. Cracked concrete along the patio edge. Pavers that shifted after the first wet season. A driveway that pools water every time it rains on National Boulevard. Hardscape is the foundation of any outdoor space. Get it wrong and everything built on top of it fails. Get it right and the yard works for decades without intervention. Stout Design:Build Inc has been doing this work across West LA for over two decades. We are a licensed, family-owned contractor based in Los Angeles. Our hardscape crews work specifically in neighborhoods like Mar Vista  where coastal soil conditions, lot constraints, and HOA requirements demand real experience, not guesswork.

Materials We Work With

Not every material works in every yard. We select based on your lot conditions, your home’s architecture, HOA requirements if applicable, and how you use the space. Concrete pavers are the most versatile option for most Westside properties. They handle coastal temperature swings well, individual units are replaceable if they fail, and they come in profiles from modern to traditional. We source from Belgard and Basalite, both established California manufacturers.

Natural stone — travertine, bluestone, flagstone, and slate — works well for patios and pool decks. It holds heat differently than concrete and ages well in coastal conditions. Where water is present, we select stone with the correct surface texture for slip resistance.Decomposed granite is a practical, permeable option for pathways and low-traffic zones. It drains well, which matters on lots with existing drainage challenges. Stabilized DG holds its form better than loose-set versions in high-foot-traffic areas.Large-format porcelain pavers have grown significantly on the Westside. They deliver a clean, modern look with minimal maintenance but require precision installation on a perfectly leveled base — work we have experience delivering.

Mar Vista Hardscape Work

Wasatch Avenue, Mar Vista

The homeowner had a poured concrete driveway installed in the early 2000s. Root intrusion from a mature ficus had buckled the surface in three places. The front entry pathway was crumbling at the edges. We removed the existing concrete, installed a root barrier along the tree line, and rebuilt the driveway in charcoal concrete pavers with a soldier course border. The front pathway was rebuilt in natural buff flagstone with DG infill between the stepping stones Project duration: three weeks. The new surface has held without movement for two full wet seasons.

Woodbine Street, Mar Vista

A homeowner on Woodbine Street had bare soil in the backyard. The grade sloped toward the house, which caused water to pool near the rear foundation after rain. We regraded the yard to direct water away from the structure, poured a concrete stem wall along the rear as a retaining element, and installed a large-format porcelain patio with a built-in seating wall in concrete block with a natural stone cap.

The drainage issue was fully resolved. The patio surface is level, sealed, and in use year-round. The project pulled one City of LA permit for the retaining element  handled entirely by our team. The homeowner avoided an HOA violation and now has a driveway that looks significantly better than what was there before.

Mar Vista Hardscape Challenges We Solve

Coastal soil movement. Sand-heavy soil west of Lincoln Boulevard shifts more than inland clay-based soil. We account for this with deeper base preparation and flexible paver systems that accommodate minor movement without cracking. Root intrusion from street trees. Mar Vista’s tree canopy is one of its defining features. It is also a source of hardscape failure. Established ficus and sycamore roots along Beethoven and Wasatch push up pavers and crack concrete within a few years of installation. We use root barrier systems on projects near established trees

Our Hardscape Services in Mar Vista

Patio and Outdoor Living Surfaces

The patio is where most outdoor time happens. We design and build patio surfaces in pavers, natural stone, concrete, and porcelain. Every patio project starts with proper base grading so water moves away from the home. Surface pattern, material, and edge detail are all chosen for your specific lot and home style.

Driveway Design and Paver Installation

Driveways on Mar Vista properties take more wear than most homeowners expect. Daily vehicle load, oil exposure, and seasonal moisture all affect surface longevity. We build driveways with a proper aggregate base, correct compaction depth, and ICPI-compliant edge restraint. The result holds its shape and surface for years.

Outdoor Kitchens and Built-In BBQs

Outdoor kitchens on Mar Vista properties require hardscape as the structural base. Counter surfaces, base structures, and surrounding patio surfaces all fall under our scope. We build in concrete block with stone or tile veneer — materials that handle outdoor heat exposure and coastal moisture without warping or deteriorating.

Commercial Hardscape

We work with commercial property owners, property managers, and HOAs across the Westside on parking areas, entry plazas, walkways, and courtyard surfaces. Commercial projects require higher load-bearing specs and often involve ADA compliance for accessible pathways. We have experience with both

Our Installation Process

Site Assessment

We visit the property and evaluate soil conditions, existing drainage patterns, grade changes, root zones, and structural requirements. This determines base depth, material selection, and construction sequence

Design and Material Selection

We produce a layout plan showing surface areas, material choices, edge conditions, and drainage routing. You review and approve before any work begins.

Permit Submission

For qualifying projects retaining walls, structural elements, and commercial work we submit permit applications to the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.

Site Preparation.

Demo of existing surfaces, excavation to the correct base depth, grading for drainage, and compaction of the aggregate base. This step is where most contractors cut corners. We do not.

Our Projects

Warranty and Workmanship Guarantee

Our hardscape workmanship warranty covers one full year from project completion. If a paver shifts, a joint fails, or a surface shows installation-related defects within that period, we return and fix it at no charge.Base failure caused by soil movement beyond normal seasonal variation is assessed on a case-by-case basis. We document pre-construction soil conditions on every project so there is no ambiguity about what was there before we started. Sealer reapplication and joint sand replenishment are maintenance items, not warranty items. We provide written care guidelines for every surface we install so you know what to expect and when.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hardscape and what does it include?

Hardscape refers to the non-living, structural surfaces and elements in an outdoor space. This includes patios, driveways, walkways, retaining walls, steps, fire pit surrounds, seating walls, and outdoor kitchen structures. Everything that is built rather than planted falls under hardscape

How long does hardscape installation take in Mar Vista?

A standard paver patio on a prepared site takes three to five days for installation. Driveway replacements run one to two weeks depending on size and base work required. Full backyard hardscape projects with multiple elements typically run two to four weeks from start to completion.

What is the most low-maintenance hardscape surface for a Mar Vista backyard?

Concrete pavers require the least ongoing maintenance. Individual units can be replaced if damaged, joints can be re-sanded if needed, and the surface holds up to coastal UV exposure without significant fading. Sealed concrete is a close second for low-maintenance performance.
