Custom Pool Construction in Mar Vista

Mar Vista homeowners spend time outside. The neighborhood sits close enough to the coast that evenings are cool and afternoons are long. A yard without a pool in this zip code is a yard that is not working as hard as it could. We design the pool, integrate it with the surrounding hardscape and landscape, pull every required permit from the City of Los Angeles, and build it with our own crews.

Why Pool Construction in Mar Vista Requires Local Knowledge

Mar Vista sits in a coastal transition zone between Venice and Culver City. The soil conditions here  particularly on lots west of Inglewood Boulevard contain a higher sand and clay mix than inland Los Angeles neighborhoods. That affects excavation depth, shotcrete application, and how the pool shell performs over time. Lots on streets like Grand View Avenue and Charnock Road vary significantly in grade. Some are flat and wide. Others have subtle slope changes that affect drainage routing when a pool is added. Water that has nowhere to go during heavy rain events creates problems for the pool structure and the surrounding landscape.

Automation

Pentair IntelliCenter and Jandy iAqualink automation systems allow remote control of pool temperature, lighting, water features, and filtration schedules from a smartphone.

Lighting

Pentair IntelliBrite and Hayward ColorLogic LED systems. Full-color programmable with app control. Energy consumption is a fraction of older halogen systems.

Mar Vista Pool Projects — Completed Work

backyard remodeling

Grand View Avenue, Mar Vista — Custom Gunite Pool With Integrated Spa and Deck

A homeowner on Grand View Avenue had a flat, underused backyard with no existing hardscape. The goal was a full outdoor transformation with a pool as the centerpiece. We designed a custom rectangular pool with an integrated raised spa and spillover waterfall. The pool finish is a blue-gray pebble aggregate. Travertine coping and a large-format concrete paver deck surround the pool. A low planted berm along the rear property line provides privacy and frames the pool area without requiring a full fence.

Charnock Road, Mar Vista — Pool Renovation and Full Deck Replacement.

An existing pool on Charnock Road had original plaster from the 1980s and a deteriorated concrete deck with multiple surface cracks. The pool equipment was single-speed and significantly undersized for the pool volume. We replastered the pool in a dark gray quartz aggregate finish, replaced the concrete deck with large-format porcelain pavers in a matte finish for slip resistance, installed new travertine coping, and replaced all equipment with a variable-speed Pentair pump and updated filtration system.

Our Services

Custom In-Ground Pool Design and Construction

Every pool we build in Mar Vista starts with a site-specific design. We assess the lot dimensions, orientation, sun exposure, existing grade, soil conditions, and how the homeowner plans to use the space. From that we produce a pool design that fits the yard not a catalog shape dropped into a space it was not designed for. We build in gunite and shotcrete the construction method used for fully custom in-ground pools. Gunite allows any shape, any depth, and any feature configuration. It is the standard for custom residential pool construction in Los Angeles

Spa and Water Feature Integration

A spa integrated into the pool design shares the pool's plumbing, heating, and filtration system. This is more cost-effective than a standalone spa and creates a more cohesive look. We design spa placements that make sense structurally and aestheticallyraised spas with spillover waterfalls, recessed spa pockets, and inline spa configurations depending on the yard and the homeowner's preference. Water features sheet waterfalls, deck jets, bubblers, and scuppers — are designed as part of the pool plan, not added on as afterthoughts. Water movement affects acoustics, aesthetics, and the overall feel of the outdoor space

Pool Decking and Coping

The pool deck is the surface you spend most of your time on — more than the pool itself in most cases. We design decks in concrete pavers, natural stone, poured concrete, and porcelain. All deck materials are selected for slip resistance, heat reflectivity in the coastal LA sun, and durability in a wet environment. Coping the cap material that finishes the pool edge is chosen to complement both the pool finish and the deck surface. Travertine, bullnose concrete, and natural stone coping are all options we work with regularly on Mar Vista projects.

Pool Lighting and Electrical

LED pool lighting transforms how a pool looks after dark. Color-changing LED systems allow the pool color to shift from white to blue to any setting the homeowner chooses through a smartphone app. We install Pentair and Hayward LED systems both industry standards for residential pool lighting in Los Angeles. All pool electrical work is permitted and inspected by the City of LA. Bonding requirements the grounding of all metal components in and around the pool are completed to National Electrical Code standards on every project.

Pool Equipment and Energy Efficiency

Variable-speed pool pumps are now required by California Title 20 energy efficiency standards for new residential pool installations. We specify and install variable-speed pumps from Pentair and Hayward that reduce energy consumption by up to 80 percent compared to single-speed models. Solar heating is available as an option for Mar Vista properties with sufficient south-facing roof exposure. Equipment pads are designed and located to meet City of LA setback requirements and HOA guidelines where applicable. Equipment enclosures are available for noise reduction and aesthetic continuity.

Pool Renovation and Replastering

Existing pools in Mar Vista that need surface restoration, equipment upgrades, or redesign are within our scope. Replastering options include standard white plaster, quartz aggregate finishes, and pebble finishes that provide texture, durability, and a more natural appearance. Tile replacement, coping replacement, and deck resurfacing are all available as standalone or combined renovation scopes

No Handoffs.  Design, engineering, permitting, excavation, shotcrete, plumbing, electrical, tile, coping, and finish landscape are coordinated by one project manager. One phone number. No gaps. Fixed-Price Proposals Before Any Work Begins  A written, line-item proposal covering every element  design fees, permits, excavation, materials, labor, and cleanup — is provided before you commit. The number does not change unless you change the scope in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of pool is best for a Mar Vista property?

Gunite and shotcrete in-ground pools are the standard for custom residential construction in Los Angeles. They allow any shape, any depth, and any feature configuration. Fiberglass shells are an option for simpler shapes at lower cost but offer less design flexibility. Vinyl liner pools are rare in coastal Southern California. We advise on the best construction type for your specific lot and scope during the site assessment.

Does a pool increase home value in Mar Vista?

In most cases, yes. The National Association of Realtors reports that outdoor amenity improvements including pools add measurable value in competitive coastal California markets. In Mar Vista specifically, where outdoor living is a core part of the neighborhood lifestyle, a well-designed pool and outdoor space adds both daily quality of life and resale appeal.

How long does pool construction take in Mar Vista from start to finish?

A standard custom in-ground pool project in Mar Vista runs twelve to sixteen weeks from permit approval to first swim. The permit process itself adds four to eight weeks before construction begins. Full outdoor transformation projects pool plus deck plus landscape may run sixteen to twenty weeks total depending on scope.
