Landscape Construction Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a tough place to build outdoors. The soil in the Valley is mostly clay. The hillsides above Brentwood and Pacific Palisades shift every time it rains. The Santa Ana winds dry everything out in October. And the city has some of the strictest water conservation rules in the country. At Stout Design : Build, Inc, We have been building in these conditions for years. We know what works and what does not. We are CSLB-registered and we use our own crews on every single project. No subcontractors. No hand-offs. You meet us on day one, and we are still there on the last day.

What Is Landscape Construction and How Is It Different From Regular Landscaping?

Landscaping is planting and maintenance. Landscape construction is building. Patios, retaining walls, grading, drainage systems, pergolas, outdoor kitchens — these are permanent structures that change how your property functions.

In California, any project over $500 in combined labor and materials legally requires a CSLB contractor credential. Ours is current, bonded, and posted on the California State License Board website at cslb.ca.gov. Verify it before you hire anyone.

What We Bring to Every Project
Our designer and our build crew work together from the first site visit. When we show you a 3D plan, our foreman has already looked at it. He knows the grade of your yard, the soil type, and how long each phase will take. That is what lets us give you a fixed price instead of a range. Do I Need a Permit for Landscape Construction in Los Angeles?

Sometimes yes. Retaining walls over 4 feet, grading that moves more than 50 cubic yards, and new outdoor electrical all require a permit through the LA Department of Building and Safety. Most cosmetic work and basic patio installs do not. We review your project at the consultation stage and tell you exactly what applies. If permits are needed, we file them and manage the process. You do not fill out a single form.

Our Landscape Construction Services in Los Angeles

Every service below is done by our own team. We do not bring in outside crews.

Hardscape Construction

Patios, driveways, walkways, retaining walls, steps, concrete work. Pavers are our most requested job in the city because they hold up against the heat, the occasional freeze in the foothills, and the ground movement that comes with seismic activity. We carry travertine, flagstone, concrete, and porcelain. Every hardscape job starts with a compacted base and a proper drainage grade — the foundation that keeps every surface solid through Southern California winters.

Retaining Walls and Land Grading

Hillside properties are common across Bel Air, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, and Palos Verdes. Slopes need walls that are engineered, not just stacked. We build tiered systems using concrete block, natural stone, and treated timber. Every structural wall job includes a soil assessment and drainage behind the wall. Proper drainage behind every wall is standard on every project we build.

Irrigation System Installation

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California reports that about half of all residential water use in LA goes to outdoor irrigation. We install smart controller systems, drip lines, and rotary nozzles that deliver water precisely where it is needed. Our setups comply with LA County's Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance. Most clients see a lower water bill within the first billing cycle after installation.

Softscape and Planting

Los Angeles has a Mediterranean climate. Drought-tolerant California natives like Ceanothus, Salvia, and Toyon do better here than most imported ornamentals. The Theodore Payne Foundation notes that established native plants can use 60 to 80 percent less water than conventional turf. We recommend natives where they fit the project. When a client wants more traditional planting, we spec varieties that can survive on an efficient irrigation schedule without wasting water.

Outdoor Living Areas

According to NOAA, Los Angeles averages 284 sunny days per year. We build pergolas, shade structures, outdoor kitchens, BBQ islands, and fire features across Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, and South Bay. These are not luxury additions. In LA, they are how families actually use their homes.

Artificial Turf Installation

The products we install are soft, heat-resistant, and certified free of lead and PFAS compounds by the Synthetic Turf Council. For homeowners under LA water restrictions or tired of brown lawns every August, artificial turf is a permanent fix. No water. No mowing. No fertilizer.

Commercial Landscape Construction

HOAs, office parks, retail centers, and apartment complexes all have different needs than a residential backyard. Tighter timelines. More stakeholders. More paperwork. We hold a General Contractor credential for commercial scope work and assign a dedicated project manager to every commercial job. We send written weekly progress reports and work around occupied property schedules.

Three Real Projects. Three Real Los Angeles Families.

01.
Full Backyard Transformation in Beverly Hills
The client had a 1960s house one block north of Wilshire Boulevard. The original concrete backyard had never been updated. Every winter, water pooled against the foundation. We tore out the slab, regraded with a 2 percent slope toward a new French drain, built a paver patio in tumbled travertine, framed a steel pergola, and planted a drought-tolerant border using California native shrubs. The project finished in 18 working days. The final invoice matched the quote exactly. Three months later, the client's Zillow estimate had climbed $47,000.
02.
Hillside Retaining Walls in West Los Angeles
The rear slope needed structural stabilization. The existing walls had reached the end of their service life. We built three tiered concrete block walls with drainage behind each course. Between tiers we laid decomposed granite paths and planted native groundcover. The job required an LADBS grading permit. We filed it, tracked it, and got it approved. The client now has three usable terraced areas where there was nothing but a sliding hillside before.
03.
Drought-Tolerant Front Yard in Santa Monica
This homeowner had received a notice from the City of Santa Monica for excessive water use. The old lawn was pulling over 800 gallons a week. We removed the lawn and applied for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California lawn replacement rebate, which currently pays up to $3.00 per square foot. We put in a decomposed granite path, a native garden with Salvia, Buckwheat, and Monkeyflower, and a drip system with a smart controller. The water bill dropped 62 percent in the first month. The client collected a $1,400 rebate check from LADWP.

Does Professional Landscape Construction Actually Increase Home Value?

The American Society of Landscape Architects says professional outdoor work returns between 100 and 200 percent at resale. The National Association of Realtors 2023 Remodeling Impact Report ranks outdoor living projects among the top five highest-ROI home improvements. In Los Angeles, where median home prices sit above $900,000, a well-built outdoor space adds verifiable equity. It also makes the home sell faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a landscape construction project take in Los Angeles?

A single patio or front yard redesign usually wraps in 5 to 10 working days. Mid-size backyard projects with grading and hardscape take 2 to 4 weeks. Larger projects including retaining walls, irrigation, outdoor living structures, and planting run 4 to 8 weeks. We put a firm completion date in your contract and hold to it.

Do you work with HOAs and commercial properties in Los Angeles?

Yes. Our team has completed projects for HOA communities across Hancock Park, Bel Air Estates, and Brentwood Park. We understand HOA approval processes, commercial building codes, and what it means to work around tenants and daily business operations. Every commercial job gets a dedicated project manager and weekly written progress updates.

Can we see examples of previous work before hiring?

Yes. Our project gallery shows completed work organized by project type. Before-and-after photos are available for hardscape builds, drought-tolerant conversions, hillside retaining wall projects, and full backyard transformations. We also welcome site visits to completed projects when the homeowner agrees.
