Landscape Design in Orange County

Your property gets 280 sunny days a year. Most of it goes to waste. Stout Design Build changes that with landscape design built for how you actually live — and built for the specific conditions of your OC property. Tom Stout has planned and installed outdoor environments across Orange County since 1986, from flat lots near Bolsa Chica in Huntington Beach to steep hillsides off Temple Hills Drive in Laguna Beach.

One licensed team. One contract. Landscape design and installation together from day one.

Note: If your project requires stamped architectural plans, WELO documentation, grading permits, or commercial landscape architecture services, see our Landscape Architecture in Orange County page. This page covers residential landscape design: planting plans, yard transformations, drought-tolerant gardens, and full outdoor installations.

01.
Why Most Outdoor Projects in OC Fall Apart Before They Start
This part of Southern California has four distinct micro-climates. Coastal salt air near Newport Beach corrodes cheap irrigation parts within two years. Santa Ana winds dry out inland yards in Anaheim Hills overnight. South County HOAs in Mission Viejo and Coto de Caza maintain strict plant approval lists. Canyon communities in San Juan Capistrano fall under CAL FIRE defensible space rules. Most contractors treat every property the same. We don't. Every landscape design project starts with reading the land your property actually sits on.
02.
What Makes Stout Design Build Different From Other Firms
Tom holds a C-27 contractor license, a general contractor license, and a pool contractor license. Most outdoor firms hold one license. Tom holds all three. That means your landscape design, patio, irrigation, and pool all go through one team. No coordination gaps. No scheduling conflicts between separate crews. Our designer Gabrielle Harris leads every landscape design and knows what gets HOA approval in communities across Coto de Caza, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Aliso Viejo. She has produced residential planting plans across every OC micro-climate.

Why Homeowners Choose Stout Design Build for Landscape Design
We respond the same day. Most firms take 48 to 72 hours just to call back.
Local roots: Tom is based at 5611 Heil Ave in Huntington Beach. He works locally, not managing remotely.
Family-owned: Tom's name is on every project. That personal accountability doesn't exist at larger firms.
Three active CA licenses: C-27, General Contractor (B), and Pool Contractor — all verifiable at cslb.ca.gov.
Rebate help included: We file Metropolitan Water District and MWDOC turf rebate applications on your behalf. A 1,500 sq ft lawn removal can qualify for $3,000 back.
Landscape design and installation under one roof: The team that draws your plan is the team that installs it. No miscommunication.

Our Landscape Design Services

We’ve worked with OC homeowners for over three decades, handling everything from small front yards to full property renovations. Every service is handled by the same team. No third-party crews. No handoffs.

Residential Landscape Planning

Full landscape design plans, plant palettes, 3D renderings, and material boards for homes across Orange County. Every plan meets your city's building code and HOA requirements before installation begins.

California Native and Drought-Tolerant Planting

Agave, California fescue, penstemon, manzanita, and native sages that thrive without constant watering. These plantings qualify for turf replacement rebates through MWDOC and Metropolitan Water District. Drought-tolerant landscape design is one of the most requested services in OC right now — and one of the best returns on investment.

Irrigation and Smart Water Systems

Drip irrigation, smart controllers, and soil moisture sensors. We design every irrigation system to meet California's Water Efficient Landscape requirements on every install and cut average water use by 40% or more.

Hardscape and Outdoor Surfaces

Paver patios, natural stone walkways, retaining walls, and driveways. Every structure accounts for OC's drainage requirements and is engineered for the soil conditions on your lot. For detailed hardscape pricing and material options, see our dedicated Hardscape Contractor in Orange County page.

Slope Stabilization

Hillside lots in Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo, and San Clemente need proper grading before planting begins. We handle the site preparation and city submittals so you don't have to. Projects requiring a stamped grading plan from a licensed professional are handled through our Landscape Architecture service.

Commercial Properties

HOA common areas, retail centers, and office campuses. Plant palettes built around local commercial requirements and OC's water budget standards.

Real Landscape Design Projects We Built Across OC

Waterfront Estate: From Dead Lawn to Mediterranean Garden

A traditional lawn that water restrictions made impossible to keep alive. Two HOA notices already in hand. We designed a Mediterranean front yard landscape with decomposed granite paths, Agave attenuata, Santa Barbara daisy, and rosemary hedges. HOA approval: 14 days. Water use dropped 58%. Rebate check from Metropolitan Water District: $3,400.

30-Foot Slope Stabilized With Native Plants

Ice plant covering a steep slope that was eroding and flagged as a fire hazard by CAL FIRE. Two contractors had already walked away. We planted toyon, lemonade berry, sugar bush, and buckwheat. These hold slopes better than ice plant and need almost no irrigation after two years. The homeowner's fire insurance premium dropped after the hazardous vegetation was cleared.

2,400 Sq Ft Turf Removal — HOA Approved First Submission

Two previous landscape design submissions from other designers had been rejected. We researched the approved plant palette, met with the committee before submitting, and got first-round approval. Lavender, ornamental grasses, and desert willow in front. Decomposed granite seating area and drip-fed beds in back. Metropolitan Water District rebate: $4,800.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does landscape design cost in Orange County?

Most residential landscape design projects in OC run between $8,000 and $75,000 depending on property size, plant selection, and whether irrigation is included. We provide an itemized quote listing planning fees, materials, labor, and irrigation separately. No lump sums.

Can you handle HOA approval for my landscape design?

Yes. We prepare and submit HOA architectural review packages for communities in Coto de Caza, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, Aliso Viejo, and others. We research your HOA's approved plant palette before drawing anything, which is why we have a strong first-round approval rate.

What drought-tolerant plants work in Orange County?

OC has four micro-climates. Coastal properties do well with Santa Barbara daisy, Agave attenuata, and rosemary. Inland lots handle penstemon, manzanita, and California fescue well. Hillside lots near canyon communities benefit from toyon, lemonade berry, and sugar bush for slope stability. We specify plants by location, sun exposure, and your HOA's approved list.

Do you help with Metropolitan Water District turf rebates?

Yes. We file MWD and MWDOC turf replacement rebate applications on your behalf. Removing a 1,500 sq ft lawn and replacing it with drought-tolerant landscape design can qualify for $3,000 to $4,800 in rebates. We track the application and follow up with the water district.

What is the best time of year for landscape installation in OC?

Fall and early winter are ideal. Soil temperatures are still warm enough for root establishment, but irrigation requirements are lower than summer. Native plant landscapes installed in fall establish faster and require less water through their first dry season. We can install year-round — OC's climate allows it — but fall gives the best results.

My project needs a stamped grading plan. Can you handle that?

Yes, but that service is handled through our Landscape Architecture division. Gabrielle Harris, our licensed landscape architect, produces and stamps grading plans, drainage plans, and WELO documentation for projects that require it. See our Landscape Architecture in Orange County page for details.
